ON SATURDAY, the White House press secretary Sean Spicer began his new job by claiming despite all evidence that 1.5 million people turned out to see Donald Trump’s swearing-in ceremony.

This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period.

The comments were in response to these aerial photographs comparing the crowd at Obama’s inauguration in 2009 to Trump’s:

Yesterday, Trump’s senior advisor Kellyanne Conway defended Spicer, saying he had given “alternative facts”, and unwittingly started a new meme.
